Rock and Roll

“I remember every little thing. As if it only happened yesterday.” It was 2017. I was walking into the Dominion Theatre for the 12th time, to see my favourite show of the season.
Fast forward to 2025. This week I walked into the New Victoria Theatre to be reunited with an old flame.
8 years on it is incredible to see how much this production has grown. The changes that have been made to take it from a resident Westend production to a touring one. The structural changes that revised the story line, the vastly improved character development and representation.

I have always been enamoured with Bat out of Hell. It has always had the music and casting. And now, the narrative has caught up. This performance completely blew me away.
Without too many spoilers… Raven, played by Katie Tonkinson, in this production feels far more empowered. Far more likeable. She has a stronger voice. A bigger presence throughout the production.
Falco, played by Rob Fowler, who has really grown this character himself. Playing Raven’s Dad both on the Westend and on tour. Falco is still the abusive parent and partner, anger and control issues to boot. In this touring rendition this character is portrayed with the tiniest bit more of humanity. This is mostly down to the removal of the frankly bizarre post interval dungeon scene that the Westend version had. In today’s version….
The Lost are given far more of an opportunity to tell each of their stories. Through physicality and freedom. Objects in the Rearview Mirror is used far more effectively. To tell us more about each of The Lost and their relationships with each other. On a personal note, this song will always affect me. But this version is the first to have brought me straight to tears. And I loved every moment of it. Ryan Carter (Jagwire), Sophie-Rose Emery (Valkyrie) & Reece Duncan (Esquivel) bring so much energy to their characters, so much talent to the stage. Making them unforgettable.

Luke Street’s Strat is a lovable disaster. And I think my new favourite. Vocally Street is incredible. Hearing him sing at the shopping centre pop up before the show even opened got me very excited to see the entire production.

I will most certainly have to see this production again.
