The Naked Ladies...

Of York House Gardens

I regularly dream of this place. It's lived in my mind's eye since I first found out about it. Its permanent residence confirmed after I visited in 2017 on my 23rd birthday.

This spectacular fountain has the most unimaginative name possible. Most likely named by the council who owns it quickly for documentation purposes and no ones looked back since 1924. This is; Fountain at west end of York House Gardens. The name it is more well known as is; The Naked Ladies. Theres even a local ale named after them.

They are a landmark to the local community but are lesser known across the wider city and internationally.

The figures are said to depict the daughters of the Titans; Oceanus and Tethys. They make up eight of the Oceanids that according to mythology were three thousand in number. It is believed the eight that have found themselves depicted in York House Gardens were part of a bigger set of larger than life female nude figures. Brought over from Italy at the end of the 19th century. No one knows what happened to the others. Or at least no ones talking about it. These things have a funny habit of popping up when someone needs to avoid paying large amounts of inheritance tax here in the UK 😆. So we may yet find out.

The figures are carved from Carrara marble from modern day Tuscany in Italy. They came under the care of the local authority when the previous owners failed to sell them, lucky for us. The adjoining York House is still used by Twickenham Council. And they have taken pretty good care of the statues across the last century. Protecting them from the blitz by coating them in a protective 'sludge' to avoid their reflection in the moonlight giving away their location. They also removed this coating and repaired the statues in subsequent years when they were graffitied.

I have wanted to do a photoshoot here for a very long time. And two weeks ago I finally did it!

A big shout out to my friend Sandra who not only came with me for this shoot, but also showed me a few other local gems and became the artistic director for part of the shoot!

For this photoshoot I wanted to try match the colours of the statues and their ethereal aura. And being heavily inspired by Hello Miss Jordan and Alexandra Tealeaf's princess styled photoshoots I came up with this look. Made up of the Sophie Embellished Tulle Maxi Dress from Monsoon that I found online during their recent sale. And a shirt I found in my local Primark!

The plan wasn't to use my own hair but I didn't give myself enough time to find the perfect wig before shooting. I think it worked out well using my own hair because of the autumn colours. However going forward I will be upping my wig game! If anything to try and avoid another Kate Bush incident, see photo below 😆

I am really looking forward to visiting the statues again. If you would like to visit them the closest train station is: Twickenham. It is less than 10 minuets walk!

As promised... when the aim was to look classical, regal, ethereal. But you ended up out on the wiley, windy moors, rolling and falling in green 😆
