***in three words:***
Wonderful, Heartbreaking, Educational
When the opportunity arose to see this show I jumped at it. It has been on my to see list since it opened in 2021.
After seeing a number of successful musical biopic films, using various artist's works to tell their tale. I was curious to see how it would be done in the theatre setting.
The powerful life story of Bob Marley is one that needed to be told. It is embarrassing that it hadn’t already been picked up. But we are here now.

This show is unlike any I have seen before. From start to finish they take the 'rules' and throw them out. Dancing on through. It is a fresh take on the structure and content of a Westend show. I loved every second.
Michael Duke, whom plays the icon of the evening Bob Marley. Captures the attention of everyone from the moment he takes to the stage. He takes a hold of the essence of Bob Marley himself. Channeling every aspect of his being. It is truly magical to watch. Seeing this show is the closest you can get too being in one of those historic crowds. At a ground breaking or uniting Bob Marley gig of a time that has, in someways long escaped us. And in others, has over stayed its welcome.
The show handles a lot of themes that traditionally people shy away from. Racism, Colonisation, Drug Use, Infidelity. To name a few. It is iconic in how it displays these. Confronting their majority, on the night i was there, white audience.
In the show one of the Wailers mocks the group. For playing their music to white boys. The music born out of the fight against oppression . Against these colonisers. Was now being performed, out of context, in a safe privileged bubble. To the grandchildren of these regimes. For their entertainment. I loved how the show confronts it's own audience with this. As we sat in a Westend theatre, in the land of the oppressor. For those who were listening, it for sure gives everyone something to think about.
Gabrielle Brooks, who portrays Rita Marley. There is only one word for this woman. Wow. Every time she was on stage I couldn’t take my eyes off of her. She is an incredible actress. With amazing vocals. She embodies every aspect of her role. Our hearts are hers from her first note.
I wish I had more to write about this production. However due to me having a somewhat large panic attack before going in, i'm afraid it left my brain a bit scrambled.
Would I go see it again? Most definitely.
